Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has gained traction as a powerful stress reduction practice. Since its development in 1979 by Dr. John Kabat Zinn at the University of Massachusetts, MBSR has been cited for its many positive benefits including lowered blood pressure, reduced anxiety, decreased auto-immune and other chronic illness symptoms, MBSR continues to be explored as a viable health practice.
Robbins Urban Wellness Retreat has offered MiM in North Minneapolis. Initially introduced in 2014 as part of a research study conducted by the ANIKA Foundation, the Program in Health Disparities Research and the Center for Spirituality & Healing, participants reported improved interpersonal interactions between family and co-workers, reduced anxiety and overall emotional awareness among other benefits.
Today, many variations to the practice have emerged including Mindfulness in Motion (MiM), a research-based program Developed by Dr. Maryanna Klatt at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. MiM offers pragmatic resiliency tools easily implemented in the workplace to reduce daily stress, increase productivity and work engagement. Participants learn mindful awareness principles that are the key to embodying the benefits of mindfulness. The 8 weekly sessions emphasize bodily relaxation with soft background music as well as discussion of mindful awareness of cognitive habits.
“This series was such a blessing to me!” says Shantae Peace. It brought me into a much needed space of healing. It also taught me techniques that I will carry with me for years to come. I am so very grateful!
The Center for Spirituality offers a series of programs and workshops on MBSR, metro-wide. They also offer a Masters of Arts degree in Integrative Health & Wellbeing.
