Black Men in America face a wide range of health challenges. These challenges can be attributed to a variety of factors, including genetics, socioeconomic status, and lack of access to healthcare. Below are some of the top 10 conditions affecting the health and wellness of Black Men.
Obesity
Black Men have a higher prevalence of obesity than other groups and can lead to several health complications like heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Hypertension
High blood pressure is a major health problem for African American Men. With the highest prevalence of hypertension in the U.S., it can lead to serious health complications, including heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.
Type 2 Diabetes
Black Men are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. Diabetes can lead to several health complications, including nerve damage, kidney damage and blindness.
Prostate Cancer
This is the most common cancer among Black Men who are more likely to develop and have a higher mortality (death rate) than other men.
HIV/AIDS
Black Men are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. Poverty, lack of access to healthcare and stigma can contribute to high rates of AIDS amongst Black Men and in the Black community overall.
Stroke and heart disease, asthma, violent crime, substance use, are some of the other health disparities affecting Black Men. Increasing prevalence of Mental Illness, is least likely to go undiagnosed or treated. However, none of these conditions need a death warrant. With simple lifestyle changes, Black Men can reclaim power over their lives! Healthy eating, avoiding fried or processed foods, getting enough sleep and drinking plenty of water can reduce the risk of many - if not all - of these conditions.
