■ Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years.
■ Many women who have fibroids don't have any symptoms
■ Fibroids may grow as a single tumor or in clusters
Risk Factors
■ Obesity and a higher body weight (more than 20% over the weight that's considered healthy for you).
■ Family history of fibroids.
■ Not having children.
■ Early onset of menstruation (getting your period at a young age).
■ Late age for menopause
Symptoms
■ Heavy menstrual bleeding
■ Menstrual periods lasting more than a week
■ Pelvic pressure or pain
■ Frequent urination
■ Difficulty emptying the bladder
■ Constipation
■ Backache or leg pains
Prevention Tips
■ In general, you can’t prevent fibroids. You can reduce your risk by maintaining a healthy body weight and getting regular pelvic exams. If you have small fibroids, develop a plan with your healthcare provider to monitor them.
